The History of the Jeep Grand Cherokee - Fargo, ND

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced in 1993, when SUV popularity was skyrocketing, thanks in part to the Ford Explorer (introduced in 1991). The Jeep Cherokee had been in existence for 10 years, but it couldn't compete with the larger, more luxurious and refined truck-based SUVs that were coming to market at the time. The Jeep brand decided it was time to get in the game and created the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Grand Cherokee offered the off-road performance consumers came to expect from the brand, but combined that performance with a more spacious and refined interior and a smooth highway ride. Three trims and three four-wheel drive systems were originally offered.

Just one year after its introduction, the Grand Cherokee saw a variety of upgrades and improvements, including upgraded sound systems, rear seat headrests, side-impact beams in the doors were added for increased crash protection, and a power sunroof.
The 1999 model year brought an entirely new generation of Grand Cherokees, adding an impressive 5.9 Limited model. The 5.9 Limited was a luxurious powerhouse, boasting a powerful 5.9-liter V8 under the hood, and was packed with upgraded amenities like a new stereo and upgraded plush leather trim. The Grand Cherokee was the quickest SUV available in 1998, with a zero to 60 mph time of just 7.3 seconds.

The 2005 model year brought the third generation of Grand Cherokees, offering enhanced refinement and performance, and a larger cabin. A new 4.7-liter V8 capable of putting out 230 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque replaced the previously-available 5.2-liter V8.

Today, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is in its fourth generation, which was first introduced in 2011. The all-new body design is more sleek and aerodynamic than any preceding models, improving both efficiency and ruggedness. It maintains its classic Jeep styling, adding even more luxury amenities, modern technology, and advanced safety features.
